Comments: Deciduous broadleaf native to the eastern US. dark green ovate 3" leaves with prominant veins on underside. Leaf edge is finely serrated. Seed pods have papery bracts which make it resemble hop seeds. Specimen has been trimmed for shape leaving it about 4' tall. There is a western species of this genus but it is not native locally. This tree was removed.
